Welcome to the Department of Internal Medicine's website

This website is primarily intended for use by department staff and their clients: medical students in their clinical years, internal medicine residents, as well as specialists in internal medicine and related specialties pursuing continuing education programs.

The purpose of this site, as all other department activities, is to shed light on the specialty of internal medicine and to assert its rightful position as the acme of modern medicine.

Internal medicine concerns itself with and is a pioneer in the diagnosis of diseases and in imparting the knowledge of basic science behind clinical practice the world over. With the increase in knowledge and a growing number of sub-specialties, skilled internists are becoming increasingly important, as only they can train medical students in correctly and wisely performing the most basic medical skills which will serve them throughout their careers: taking a medical history and performing a physical examination. Today's aging population is plagued with many concomitant diseases, complicating their medical situation. Their treatment requires an integration of knowledge and decision-making that no other medical discipline is able or willing to provide. The internist is the only one who can appreciate the complexity and treat the patient as a whole, rather than each of his or her diseases. In addition, we must not forget that there are still several diseases whose care remains the sole responsibility of the internist. As the only discipline able to teach basic medical skills, internal medicine has taken upon itself to lead clinical instruction in hospitals.

While other clinical disciplines are ever-honing their exclusion criteria for patient admission into their respective departments, internal medicine continues to serve the general patient population in need of work up and treatment in the hospital setting in a holistic manner (if I may use the expression). In this fashion, internal medicine earns the right to be a leader, both of clinical practice and of clinical teaching in hospitals.

This website has been designed to provide practical tools to all those interested in broadening their knowledge of internal medicine, through all stages of their training as physicians. We hope that the various contents available in this site will indeed meet these needs, and look forward to receiving comments from our visitors.

Sincerely,

Head of the Department of Internal Medicine,

and the Internal Medicine Department Website Team.
